hoped the time would come when the town would honour Alderman Brear as he deserved to bo honoured . He congratulated Brother Councillor Hodgson on his appointment to the chairmanship of tho Watch Committee , which was tho stepping-stone to the Mayoralty . He judged from tho various congratulations he had received that his appointment was a popular one . In conclusion , the Mayor thanked the Lodgo for the honour conferred upon him that evening .
The Town and Trade of Halifax was proposed by Bro . Keighley Walton , and responded to by Bro . C . Greenwood . St . James ' s Lodge was proposed by Bro . T . Greenwood , and responded to by Bro . T . Robertshaw , and tho concluding toast was submitted by Bro . C . T . Rhodes .
During tho evening songs were given by Bros . Ehud Hanson , Sykes Broadbent , and Alderson . Bro . Naylor , of Brighouse , also favoured the company with a humourous recital .

This exceptionally good attendance of members and visitors ( some of the latter being connected with the shipping interest ) , was probably due to the fact that Mr . John Walter Fry , Ship Broker , Manchester , had been proposed to become a member of the Craft . The ballot having been taken it was found to be unanimously in his favour , and after due preparation he was initiated by the W . M ., the latter being assisted by Bro . Lever J . W ., who presented and explained the Working Tools .
A second ceremony was duo , and after the usual interrogatories had been satisfactorily answered by Bro . Thomas Bibby , he was passed to the degree of F . C . by the W . M ., who in this instance was assisted by Bro , Harrison S . W ., the latter presenting and explaining the Working Tools of the degree .
The election of Officers took place with the following result : — Bros . H . J . Harrison S . W . Wor . Master-elect , J . 0 . Brown Treas ., S . Whittaker Charity Representative , Griffiths , Greenup and Swift Auditors .
At the festive hoard Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , that of the Initiate , proposed by the W . M ., being responded to by Bro . Fry in brief and appropriate terms . The W . M . also proposed the health of the newly-passed Brother , to which Brother Bibby responded .
Bro . Tyers P . M . proposed the health of the W . M ., saying that it was a pleasure to him to have been entrusted with that duty . Upon his last night of office Bro . Brown had put in a good record , and he congratulated him upon the excellent manner in which he had performed the two ceremonies . He had seen many ceremonies performed , and he might say without fear of contradiction that the W . M . had done his work well , and to the satisfaction of the Brethren .
Bro . Brown said he thanked them for the manner in which they had responded to the toast of his health . As stated by Bro . Tyers , this was his last night of office , and he looked back with pleasure upon his year of Mastership . In Bro . Harrison as W . M .-elect they had chosen one who would do well . As schoolmates and
playmates together thoy had had many things in common , and it was a singular coincidence that Bro . Harrison should succeed him in the chair of K . S . It was with the greatest pleasure that he proposed his health , knowing that he would carry out tho principles of Masonry at any sacrifice .
Bro . Harrison , in reply , thanked them for the kind and courteous way in which the toast had been received . It would give him peculiar pleasure to follow his old friend Bro . Brown , and when he got into the chair he would do his best to discharge the duties of the high and important office of W . M .

No . 199 , Dover , which was successful ; and a notice of motion by Bro . J . W . Abbott P . M . Charity Representative : — " That the sum of ten pounds be voted from the Charity Fund of the Lodge to the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent
Institution , " this sum being granted , while from promises made to Bro . Abbott it is likely this amount will be supplemented by others . At the festive board which followed , songs , etc ., were given by various Brethren , which formed a pleasant contrast to the usual toasts .
In proposing the health of the W . M ., Bro . Smith said it gave him very great pleasure to give his health at such an early stage of his Mastership , and he considered it to be a great honour that he had been singled out to perform this duty . He trusted Bro . Goodfellow would havo a successful year , and hoped his Officers would support him as he deserved .
Tho W . M . thanked thoso present for the kind and flattering way in which they had accepted the toast of his health . He felt honoured to know he was passing satisfactorily through his various difficulties . His progress in Masonry had been quick , but he trusted that he had ingratiated himself into the good opinions of the
members . He would do his best to help his Lodge forward m any way possible . He had done his best to keep his Officers to their duties , but many were away on various matters of business ; however , he looked forward to a good attendance , and also to some grand working before long .

BROTHER W . A . FOSTER , of Lome House , Bangor , has been unanimously elected Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . During Bro . Foster ' s year of office it falls to the lot of the Anglesea Lodge to entertain the Provincial Grand Lodge of North Wales at its annual meeting . o o 0

THE re-opening , after handsome re-decoration , of the quarters of this Lodge was celebrated afc Newton Abbot , on Tuesday evening of last week , with a conversazione , which was of particular interest , inasmuch as Bro . W . J . Hughan P . M . P . G . D . Eng ., & c , who is such a well-known authority on Freemasonry , delivered a short lecture on " Freemasonry in its connection with Newton
Abbot and Newton Bushel . " He said the first regular Lodge at Newton Abbot was started in 1759 at the Sun Tavern , but was after a time transferred to Exmouth , where it still remained . The second Lodge , formed in 1769 , was called the Royal George Lodge , and met in the Oxford Inn . This also did not flourish , and was subsequently transferred to Bridport , being ultimately struck
off tho roll . The next Lodge formed at Newton Bushel originally met at the Freemasons' Arms , now known as the Commercial . Brother Hoarder , grandfather of the W . M . of the Devon Lodge , was one of its members . Another Lodge called the Morning Star was opened in 1 72 , but it would have been better named the
Comet , for it had a very brief life . Tho substantial Newton Lodge was then formed in 1866 , tho Devon Lodge , under whose auspices they were met that ovening . Ho regarded that hall as one of the prettiest in Devon . Indeed , he had seen many in England and Scotland , and that seemed to take the palm .
Bro . the Rev . G . T . Warner P . Prov . G . C . moved a cordial voto of thanks to the lecturer . Bro . F . J . W . Crowe P . Prov . G . O ., of Torquay , showed a unique collection of Masonic curios , including a complete series of the various certificates issued by the " Regular , " " Atholl , " and United Grand Lodges of England ; and certificates , jewels , aprons and sashes of Masonic Grand Bodies from all parts of the world , 0 O 0
