On the day of the Royal Arch meeting Comp . Maxwell ' s firm ( Maxwell and Tute , Manchester ) had invited a number of journalists and gentlemen interested in the scheme to visit Rock Point , New Brighton , in order to note the progress which is being made by way of converting the estate into recreation grounds . At the subsequent proceedings Comp . Maxwell , alluding to the formation of the Company , said the public were only asked to subscribe for the preference shares , and they were offered as valuable assets £ 100 , 000 worth of land , £ 215 , 000 worth of buildings , and they would have £ 5 , 000 of working capital . For this £ 320 , 000 the public were only asked for £ 270 , 000 , and if it were not good enough for the public the promoters
would get nothing at all . Every penny of the required capital was guaranteed .
