5 . REPORT OF THE BOARD OF GENERAL PURPOSES . To the United Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of England . The Board have to report that they have had under their consideration the rate of salary at present received by Brother Adam John Berry , fitfh clerk in the Grand Secretary ' s Office , who has served them for 14 years , and arrived four years ago at the maximum rate

of £ 200 a year—as fixed for all the junior clerks by Grand Lodge , in the year 1874—and whose age renders his prospects of future advancement very remote . It appears to the Board that under tho circumstances some small addition might fairly be made to his present rate , and they therefore recommend the following arrangement for the approval of Grand Lodge : —

"That the salary of Brother Adam John Berry be raised to £ 225 from the 1 st January last . " Tho Board have further to report that R . W . Brother Sir John Braddiok Monckton P . G . W . has offered , for the acceptance of Grand Lodge , a portrait of himself , painted by Brother B . S . Marks , aud which was presented to him somo years ago by the Buckingham and Chandos

Lodge , No . 1150 . The Board uro much gratified that an opportunity should occur of placing in some honourable position the portrait of the eminent Brother who presided over the Board for a period of ten years with snch distinguished ability , and have great pleasure in recommending that it be accepted , with thanks by Grand Lodge , and placed ou tho walls of the Board Room . NOTICES OF MEETINGS .

— : o : — CONSECRATION OF THE UNIVERSITIES LODGE , No . 2352 .

IN prescribed form and with impressive ceremony , Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., Provincial Grand Master of Durham , on Satnrday the 22 nd inst ., consecrated a new Lodge , which has been established for the use of Masonio members of Durham University , and which will be known as the Universities Lodge , No . 2352 . The new Lodge owes its existence to the efforts of a few of the moat

prominent members of the Craft in the connty , the following being a list of the founders : —Canon Tristram , Canon Kynaston , Bros . Richard Look , Robert Yeld , Joseph Forster , Dr . 0 . D . Hill . Drury , James Lawrence , Lionel Booth , Thomas Randell , Edward Jepson , William Pixton S waling , and Joseph Rushton Shorifc . The ceremony of consecration took place in the Durham Masonio Hall ,

where , in response to the invitation of the founders , there was a very large gathering . The brethren having assembled in the ante-room and signed the attendance book , took their place in the Lodge room under the direction of the Director of Ceremonies . At half-past three o ' clock the Provincial Grand Master took the chair , and opened the Lodge in the three degrees . Prayer having been offered by the

Provincial Grand Chaplain , the anthem " Hail , Eternal , by whose aid" was sung , and the Provincial Grand Master then addressed those present . The brethren who signed the petition were then directed to stand forward in the body of the Lodge . This having been done , the Provincial Grand Secretary read the petition and warrant of the new Lodge received from the United Grand Lodge of

England . The Provincial Grand Master next addressed the petition , ing brethren , and inquired whether they approved of the Officers named in the petition and warrant . The brethren having signified their approval in Masonic form , the Provincial Grand Mastor called upon the Provincial Grand Chaplain , who delivered an oration on the nature and purposes of the installation . The ode ,

" Hail , Masonry Divine , was then sung , and the Acting Depnty Provincial Grand Master presented the jewels and collars of the new Lodge to the Provincial Grand Master , and afterwards to the W . M . designate of the new Lodge ( Canon Tristram . ) The Officers and brethren of the new Lodge then formed in two columns in front of the pedestal , the anting Deputy Provincial Grand Master being at the

head of the right , and the two Provincial Grand Wardens at the head of the left column . The Provincial Grand Chaplain then read verses 1 to 7 of the 8 th chapter of the Book of Kings , after which the Lodge boards were reverently unveiled by four of the Provincial Graud Stewards , the brethren all standing to order whilst the Provincial Grand Chaplain delivered the Consecration Prayer .

A most interesting portion of the ceremony followed . The ohant " Glory to God on High" was succeeded by the Provincial Grand D . of C , the Provincial Grand Deputy D . of C , and Provincial Grand Assistant D . of C . presenting the vessels of consecration to the respective consecrating Officers . The procession ( the brethren still standing , soft music being rendered ) was then formed , the order

being as follows : —Provincial Grand Chaplain carrying the volume of sacred law with the square and compasses on a cushion , tbe Provincial Grand Junior Warden carrying vessel containing oil , the Provincial Graud Senior Warden carrying vessel containing wine , and the acting Deputy Provincial Grand Master carrying a cornucopia with corn . When tho procession reached the head of the

tracing boards the fAA ; A ; outy Provincial Grand Master scattered corn on the Lodge hi iht » end of the first round . The procession remained standing whilst tho Ode to Masonry , " Hail Masonry , thou Craft divine , " was sung . The procession was continued after this , and halting again at the head of the tracing boards , the Provincial Grand S . W . poured wine on the Lodge at the end of the second

round , after which the Ode tc " ViVnn . « Come , holy Virtue , by whose aid , " was sung . At the end ui L .. rw . i ro'urd the procession halted again , tha Provincial Grand Junior Warden sprinkling oil on the Lodge . " Come , Charity , with goodness around , " the Ode to Charity was then auug . Tho Provincial Grand Master next left the dais , and passed alone around the Lodge , scattering salt on the Lodge at tho

head of the Tracing Boards , where ho halted . The Provincial Grand Chaplain then came down from the lectern , and , walking alono carried tho couser with burning incense three times around the Lodge , the first time in silence , tho second repeating Exodus xxx . 7 , and tho third time repeating the 8 th -verse of the same

chapter . The Provincial Grand Master then dedicated the Lodge , and , the choir having sung the " Sanctus , " the Provincial Grand Chaplain offered up tho dedication prayer , and the anthem , " Glory to God in the Highest , " was sua ; . ; . The Provincial Grand Master having constituted the Lodgo , trie Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies ( in the East ) proclaimed the Universities Lodge ,
