Lodge Of Economy , No . 76 . —At the meeting of this wellknown and time immemorial Lod < re , which took place on Wednesday , tho 29 th inst ., at the Masonio Hall , Winchoster , there was a numerous attendance of influential brethren of the city , neighbonrin ? towns and provinces , to witness tho installation of Bro . F . Raymond Brvan , tho W . M . olect . Bro . E . Godwin P . M . opened the Lods » e in

tho first and second degrees , and examined Bro . Jacob ( a candidate for tho M . M . degree ) , who answered all the questions put to him in a most efficient and satisfactory manner , and , being entrusted with a test of merit , was afterwards raised to tho third decree by Bro . Gammon P . M ., Itoyal Kent Lodge of Antiquity , No . 20 , who , since his appointment as Surveyor for the Corporation of this City , has

become an active working member of tho Lodge . The ceremony was performed in an impressive manner . Bro . E . Godwin then resumed the Master ' s chair , and , assisted bv Bro . EverittP . M . nnd P . P . S . G . D . as S . W ., Bro . Harris P . M . and P . P . S . G . W . as J . W ., and Bro . C . Wadham P . M . ( 122 ( Wimbonrne ) , 58 R , 1112 and P . P S . G . W . Wilts and Dorset as D . C .. proceeded with the installation of Bro . Bryan , who had been

unanimonsly elected Master for the ensuing year . Bro . Godwin himself , and tho excellence of his work , are well known in tho Province , and wo must say the ceremony was carefully and most impressively performed by him , testimony of which was given shortly aftorwards by a special vote of tb nks being passed and recorded , on the motion of Bro . T . Stopher P . M . ( a late Mayor of the city ) . The

W . M . appointed his Officers , and the Lodge was shortly after closed in peace and harmony . Tho brethren then adjonrned to ati excellent banquet , prepared by Mrs . Spriggs , tho worthy nnd much respected hostess , at the Eoyal Hotel , where a very happy evening was spent under the able presidency of the newly-installed W . M . The usual toasts were given , and tho most hearty good wishes wore

expressed for the welfare and prosperity of the last W . M . Bro . Banchard , who recently left the city for New Zealand . On the toast of tho W . M ., Bro . Godwin paid tribute to Bro . Bryan's excellent qualities , and expressed tho great pleasure it had given him to instal Bro . Bryan , who was initiated at the same time as himself . Some little amusement was caused in tho coarse of his remarks by Bro . Godwin

stopping short , and when , on looking round the room , he found a non-Masonic waiter present , he said it seemed to him as if a spell had been broken , for just now he felt a sort of inspiration which checked his thoughts and words , and now he had found the cause in tho cowan before them , who then left tho room , and the enrrent of electricity , as it were , was again completed . Winchester , ns most of

our readers know , is full of ancient and interesting relics , and we shonld not omit to mention that the building , which is now the Royal Hotel , was formerly a convent , and the banquet on Wednesday was served in what used to be the nuns' chapel , where tho altar recess and stops are still in existence . he had sent the W . M . of the Lodge of Israel , No . 1502 , an extract from the minutes relating to the passing of Bro . Flatnu , and read that brother ' s acknowledgment of the same . The ballot was then taken for Mr . Archibald Crawford as a fit . and proper person , which proved unanimously in his favour , and he , being present , was

initiated by the W . M . in a rranner that called forth the congratulations of the " Elder Brethren . " The working tools were presented and explained by the J . W ., Dr . Young , aDd tbe -.-barge was delivered by Bro . Bowes . Hearty good wishes were tendered by the Visitors , and , no other business presenting itself , the LoLje was closed .

Z . in eloquent terms proposed the usual Loyal and 11 . A . ti asts . The ME Z . propped the h-nlth of the newly exalted Companion Qninery , who in brief but appropriate terms returned thanks . health of the Z . ; he spoke of the talent exhibited by hirn , not only on this but on many previous occasions : his perfect orkinsr was known and appreciated . C"mp . L ttanr was a true Mason , both in and ont of the Chapter , and he would ask them to drink the toast heartily . The M E . Mary ' s , Reading , proposed the toast of the

Masonic Chanties . He said that he felt honoured at being entrusted with what ho considered was one of the most important toasts of the evening . The outside work ! sneered at Freemasonry as a sort of mntu-il admiration society , the end and object of whish was to confer decorations and medals for services not very important in themselves , and he sa'd that there was a certain dancer least the

sneer mip lit be well founded , but the true end and object of the organisation was ch irity and brotherly love . Freemasons were reminded of this at t- eir initiation ; aud the Charities , the welfare of which he advocated , ' - 'ere the practical outcome of that brotherly love ; the two cxtrem ? s of life required support and assistance ; and in the Schools and * he Benevolent Institution for the Asred both

of those extremes v ere thought of and provided for . He com . mended them most eirnostly to the liberality and support of all present , and suggest * d that a short acconnt of them shonld be drawn np and civnn to even brother on initiation . He concluded by hoping that the Muster , who had said that he was about to go np as a Steward
